“Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit,” is probably the most frightening phrase in the Bible to the Christian because there is so much confusion about what it means and the penalty for committing it is so severe. That is why we must study it so as to ease our minds concerning it.

Matt. 12:31-32  Therefore I say to you, All kinds of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven to men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven to men.  (32)  And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this world or in the world to come.

The first thing that needs to be understood about Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is that an it is the only sin of which an unbeliever cannot be guilty. Only Christians can commit blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Heb. 10:28-29  He who despised Moses' Law died without mercy on the word of two or three witnesses.  (29)  Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy of punishment, the one who has trampled the Son of God, and who has counted the blood of the covenant with which he was sanctified an unholy thing, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

Any believer who intentionally and purposefully does the kinds of things condemned by Heb. 10:29 has blasphemed the Holy Spirit and and has thrown away their salvation without remedy. As the Ottoman Empire conquered the Eastern Portion of the Roman Empire, millions of Christians were given the choice to convert to Islam or die. Loving their bodies more than their souls, many chose to convert and were forced to blaspheme the Holy Spirit before conversio,n to Islam. As the Ottoman Empire is being reborn in the same region as the Kingdom of the Great Red Dragon at the end of the age, Islam will be forcing the same choice upon Christians once again. Fearing for this life, they gave up their eternal life.  Matt. 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. But rather fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (See the article on the 4th seal for more details.

There is another term closely related to Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, and that is Apostasy. Apostasy comes from the Greek Word Apostasia, which is defined as, desertion. In the New Testament it is used of a wife who leaves her husband. That is why the term is applied to the church as the “falling away, before the day that Jesus will return.

2 Thess. 2:2-3  that you should not be soon shaken in mind or troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word or letter, as through us, as if the Day of Christ is at hand.  (3)  Let not anyone deceive you by any means. For that Day shall not come unless there first comes a falling away, and the man of sin shall be revealed, the son of perdition,

The great falling way before the end of the age will occur tot the most part once again as it did in the Middle Ages. As Islam rises to power in the world Christians will be given the choice to convert to Islam or die. If we should be a part of those having to make such a choice I beg of you, Choose to die before falling away.

Another point about apostasy is that a Christian cannot apostate. Christians must first blaspheme the Holy Spirit before they can apostate. The reason is because as long as the Holy Spirit is in-dwelling us, we cannot sin away our GRACE. It has to willfully and deliberately thrown away. So remember, KEEP YOUR FAITH UNTIL YOUR LAST BREATH AND YOU WILL INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE.
